CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of over a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD doesn't produce a "high" or any form of intoxication. While THC activates CB1 receptors in the brain to produce its characteristic high, CBD is a CB1 antagonist – it blocks the intoxicating effects of THC on these receptors, which can modulate the potentially unwanted psychoactive effects of THC.
